It must be a great disappointment that the World Cup in Brazil remains a dream for the Sweden national team. What is your view on today’s game and that Sweden regrettably misses the football feast next summer?
Zlatan: We got punished in their counterattacks when we lost the ball. Their prime quality is counterattacking. We played a good game – dared to hold on to the ball and helped each other.
You had a lower position on the field, especially in the first half. Was this a tactical decision, something you were instructed to do, or your own initiative to get more ball contact?
Zlatan: When I dropped down or stayed on top it was because I wanted to maintain a good balance. I need to get the ball on my feet to be able to use my qualities.
In the 68th minute you won the duel against Bruno Alves and got that important equalizer. Four minutes later you put a scorcher under the Portuguese wall. Did you get the feeling that you were on your to a new feat like the one in Berlin?
Zlatan: I was focused and set on scoring a third goal. Instead they scored against us and then everything got much tougher, regrettably…
The next World Cup is in Russia 2018 and you will be 37 years old. Was this you last chance to play in the World Cup, and what are your thoughts on your future in the national team?
Zlatan: This was probably the last attempt to reach the World Cup on my part. That far into the future I guess I won’t be playing for the national team. One thing is certain; a World Cup without me is not worth watching – so it is no use waiting for that. Congratulations to Portugal, but both teams really deserved to go on the World Cup.
